Academic & Cognitive Skills

How to ensure students start at the appropriate level, advance at their own pace, and demonstrate competency on their own time.

How is it ensured that students start at the appropriate level with regard to their historical knowledge and needs?

CONDUCT

PRE-ASSESSMENTS

1

Standard quizzes work well, as long as the students understand then as activities and will not graded tests. Be creative! The button below offers 10 brilliant ideas to mix it up a bit.

2

INCORPORATE

PRIOR

KNOWLEDGE

Be sure to connect prior knowledge and skills within the design of learning activities and experiences. Students thrive when their learning is relevant to their lives and shaped by their individual prior knowledge.

STUDENT CREATED GOALS

3

Collaborate with each individual student in setting goals for the week and determine which components will be completed and demonstrated.

This gives a student a sense of control and motivation to learn

4

ENTRANCE

TICKETS

Begin each class with an entrance ticket in order to see how well the students understand and then create groups for independent or mini-lessons based on needs.

How do you ensure that students advance at a pace that is positioned with their needs?

CREATE

LEARNING

MENUES

1

Co-create learning menus and verticle alignment activities, such as graphic organizaers, websites, and brochures, as well as rubrics that support monitoring of agreed-upon learning objectives.

2

CONDUCT

FORMATIVE

ASSESSMENTS

Enable advancement through formative assessments and student feedback once a goal has been mastered.

ALLOW FOR

ASSESSMENT

BLOCKS

3

Students may take mastery assessments during designated "assessment blocks" when they feel ready.

4

CREATE

PACE GUIDES

Provide a pace guide that shows the students when certain concepts need to be mastered by, along with available support if not keeping up with the pace guide.

What ways are students encouraged to demonstrate competency when ready?

CHECK

FOR

UNDERSTANDING

1

Offer numerous and on-demand opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery.

2

DAILY

JOURNALING

Allow time for students to daily update their learning journals where they document their perceived level of mastery to build self-awareness.

OFFER

MULTIPLE

OPTIONS

3

Collaborate with the class to develop a list of options for learners to easily access a variety of assessment choices that may include online platforms, multimedia, and competency maps that cross all grade levels so assessments can be taken regardless of recognized "grade level".

4

STUDENT

RECOGNITION

FOR MASTERY

Giving timely and consistent recognition for progress and mastery helps keep motivation and learning at high levels. This can be done through repeated mini-conferences with students to check for understanding and progress, or an online portfolio where students and family members can view recognition for growth and good work.
